People apparently take hollow tubes coated with wax or paraffin and set it on fire. The idea is to melt earwax. Bad idea: this can lead to burns, blockages and ruptured eardrums. Instead, the American Academy of Otolaryngology recommends washing the external ear with a cloth. Avoid putting anything into the actual ear canal, because you can push wax deeper. Instead, it recommends using a few drops of mineral oil or baby oil to soften the wax, which will then work its way out on its own. So even cotton swabs are a bad idea. If you think your earwax is bad enough to require removal, see a specialist.
Laser Hair Removal
If you go with a board-certified dermatologist, this can work and produce good results. But lots of folks have this done at salons where the staff is not exactly board-certified. This means bad results like burns, scars, abnormal pigmentation and other problems can occur.
These keratin-based treatments often involve formaldehyde, a carcinogen which you can end up breathing in during the treatment. This can cause nosebleeds, dizziness and blurred vision. And did we mention formaldehyde causes cancer?
As bizarre as this may sound, people get treatments for their feet in which fish supposedly remove the dead skin when you dunk your feet inside a small tank. There are better ways to exfoliate your feet—and unlike the fish-cures, they won’t spread infections and have a much lower eww-factor.
This can be very damaging to the follicles and spreads bacteria, which is never a good look.
