Only resorting to skincare products to solve our skin problems tends to not work – have you noticed that? It’s no wonder: our bodies are ecosystems and everything we do to them affects every part of them. If you drink a lot of wine, you notice sluggish skin the next day; and if you run for a month, you lose weight, tone up, and notice a rosy glow. This is no coincidence. There is such a thing as daily habits for healthy skin that give you that coveted glow from the inside out, no makeup needed.
We’ve got 5 favorite daily habits for healthy skin here at Kristals. Let’s explore them!
5 Daily Habits for Healthy Skin That Glows Naturally
Start your day well-rested. This means getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night, depending on your individual needs. A 2016 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DCD) found that more than one-third of adults don’t get enough sleep.
What does a lack of sleep cause? Let us count just a few of the ways:
- A greater risk of heart disease
- A greater risk of diabetes
- A greater risk of mental illness
- Dark circles
- Sallow skin
Have trouble falling asleep? Try an eye mask and meditation – you can set a guided meditation to help you drift off once you’re in bed (try the Headspace app for free).
Fuel Your Body Right
Listen to your mom! You need nutrients to nourish your skin and entire body – even your mental health has a much easier time thriving when it’s got the proper fuel. Let’s cover the basics:
- Whole grains (that means brown rice over white, and try less popular grains like quinoa and buckwheat too)
- Omega-3-rich nuts & seeds like flax seeds, hemp seeds, and walnuts
- Omega-3-rich fish like sardines, mackerel, and salmon. Choose wild over farmed every time when possible
- Lots of fresh vegetables (dark leafy greens like kale and spinach especially) and fruits every day. Especially collagen-boosting, beta carotene-rich foods like members of the citrus family, papaya, carrots, beets, tomatoes, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, squashes, and all sorts of berries
Avoid fried foods, cookies, chips, and candy, and go easy on alcohol or even better, stop drinking alcohol, as it dehydrates you and depletes the body of collagen, bringing you more wrinkles faster. Apart from attacking your blood sugar, these food-like products can cause acne breakouts, sugar crashes, and moodiness, among other symptoms.
As part of your daily skincare routine, wash your face only twice with a gentle cleanser. Exfoliate with a gentle scrub a few times per week to remove dead skin cells that dampen the glow and clog pores. Choose products with natural, Earth-friendly ingredients that will help nourish your skin, like vitamins and minerals.
Additionally, include sunscreen in the mix. This is essential when we’re talkin’ daily habits for healthy skin. Protect your skin from the sun (a.k.a. wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer) with a high-SPF lotion or a moisturizer that offers a strong SPF year-round, throughout your entire life, on your face and body.
Move that booty
You can be lean and eat well, but if you aren’t exercising at least a few times per week for 30 minutes, your circulatory system, joints, and muscles aren’t able to stay strong and nimble for you. Besides, working out helps detox your skin and gives you a rosy glow. And full-body health shows in your skin and translates into longevity. Plus, the endorphins will make for a happier you (that’s the very best part, if you ask us!).
Just shower ASAP after your workouts to avoid sweat-induced breakouts, especially on the chest and back.
Not sure how to get started? Check out a website like Yoga Today to work out at home alone or with friends, take runs with your dog, or join a gym. If you want to socialize while you’re at it, check out Meetup to find local exercise groups.
The two biggest causes of wrinkles, lines and cancer are sun damage and smoking cigarettes. So if you smoke, you’ve always known it was time to quit. It’s time to take it seriously. Here’s a resource from the American Lung Association on how to quit smoking.
